Calcium oxide (CaO), commonly known as quicklime, is a white, alkaline, and crystalline solid at room temperature. It is a highly reactive compound, primarily produced by heating limestone (calcium carbonate, CaCO₃) in a process called calcination, which drives off carbon dioxide (CO₂) and leaves behind calcium oxide.

Key properties of calcium oxide include:
    1. Appearance: White, solid powder or lumps.
    2. Chemical Reactivity: It reacts vigorously with water to form calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂), a process that is exothermic (releases heat).
    3. Solubility: Calcium oxide is not very soluble in water, but it dissolves in water to form an alkaline solution known as limewater.
    4. Basicity: It is a strong base and is often used to neutralize acids.
    5. High melting point: It has a very high melting point of about 2,572°C (4,662°F).
    Uses:
    • Industrial: Calcium oxide is widely used in the production of cement and lime, as well as in the manufacture of steel and glass.
    • Environmental: It is used to treat acidic soils and water, neutralizing excess acidity.
    • Chemical production: It plays a role in various chemical processes, including the production of calcium carbide (CaC₂) for acetylene gas.

When calcium oxide reacts with water, it forms calcium hydroxide, which is also known as slaked lime. This reaction is highly exothermic and is a crucial step in several industrial and environmental processes.
